Stalybridge Clinic, Gtr. Manchester
Polyester Powder Coated Aluminium Copings
On the face of it, this looks like quite a modest project, but there is a great deal going on which is discreet in its design and execution. This clinic has been extended and modified several times, over the decades. It has mostly flat roofs, with parapet walls in various formats: flat/linear, peaked/linear and curved. There is even a complete circle. Only one small part is visible in this photograph.
The parapets had previously been finished with lead flashing, topped with concrete coping slabs and sealed with mortar. This was clearly a problematic solution: the lead had streaked the walls with oxide staining, and was in itself of interest to thieves. The mortar holding down the concrete coping stones had weathered and failed. As part of a refurbishment project, polyester powder coated aluminium copings were installed throughout to create a smart, smooth continuous surface, which is sealed with silicone sealant and is in keeping with the vernacular architecture of this well known, red-brick Victorian town.
